German Ab Initio is one of the courses in Language Acquisition (Group 2). Here IB students without prior knowledge of German can learn the language from the very basics. There are 5 themes that are studied in German Ab Initio. They are Identities, Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organisations, and Sharing the Planet.

The German language belongs to the West Germanic group of the Indo-European language family, along with English, Frisian, and Dutch. So it is not a surprise that English and German are still considered 60% lexically similar. German is most widely spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and also even the official language in Luxemburg and Belgium. Around 96, 8 million people speak German as their mother tongue.

Germany is home to famous classical composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friedrich Händel, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Felix Mendelssohn. Many literature authors and philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Heinrich Heine, Franz Kafka, Friedrich Schiller, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe are also from Germany.

When it comes to engineering and tech, we all know Germany is very well known for their cars. Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz are some of the famous car brands. With some of the best engineering universities in Europe, it is one of the most sought-after countries to study engineering in Europe.

Public universities in Germany require no tuition fee. This is why Germany is very appealing to international students. As of 2023, around 440,000 international students go to German universities. Engineering has the most international students in Germany, followed by Law, Economics, and Social Sciences.

By joining German Ab Initio in Stella Maris, students get to learn the German language and experience German culture through many activities such as German potluck, playing German board games, visiting Goethe Institut, and many more.
