English is often considered the global language, playing an important role in education and international communication. Its widespread use helps people from different parts of the world to connect and understand each other better.
As Secondary English teachers at Stella Maris Gading Serpong, we prioritize both student enjoyment and academic excellence. Our Cambridge IGCSE Curriculum is more than just an examination; it’s a transformative journey that empowers students to achieve their academic aspirations while cultivating confidence and effective communication skills.
Designed for students from different backgrounds, Cambridge IGCSE English program at Stella Maris Gading Serpong helps the students to gain confidence and needed skills to excel in English. It improves the students’ reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
We emphasize critical thinking, effective communication, and self-assurance through the Cambridge curriculum. Instead of rote memorization, we encourage students to think critically and articulate their ideas through various platforms, such as oral presentations, group discussions, debates, multimedia projects, and interactive role-plays.
Different speaking and listening activities allow students to be confident, articulate, and effective communicators aligning with the goals of the Cambridge curriculum. Reading and writing activities help students enhance their literacy skills, think critically, and express their ideas clearly. These activities also support the Cambridge curriculum’s goals by developing strong reading comprehension and writing abilities, which are essential for effective communication and academic success.
In my Grade 9 IGCSE class, I have assigned a project to my students where each group is tasked with creating a video in a different genre. This project is designed to help students explore diverse video styles, such as drama, comedy, documentary, and fantasy, enhancing their creativity. By working on different video types, students gain a deeper understanding of each genre’s unique characteristics and develop effective video presentation skills.
Another Grade 9 IGCSE activity involves group presentations featuring inspiring individuals. Students research, present, and explain their chosen person’s inspirational qualities and achievements. This activity cultivates research, public speaking, critical thinking, and presentation skills while promoting collaboration, a core Stella Maris value.
The recent Cambridge IGCSE examination results highlight the effectiveness of our program at Stella Maris Gading Serpong. With our teachers’ guidance, a high percentage of students excelled, achieving an A* grades in ESL IGCSE.
