Bridging Global Perspectives: Exploring Family, Migration, and Sustainability

By: Ms. Marichel Santos, Global Perspectives Teacher

At Stella Maris Gading Serpong School, students in Grades 7 and 8 examined significant global topics that enhanced their comprehension of the world. Through engaging lessons, discussions, and research, they acquired knowledge about family dynamics, cultural identity, migration issues, and the pressing need for environmental sustainability. These experiences not only broadened their global perspectives but also fostered empathy and critical thinking, aiding in their development as responsible, open-minded global citizens.

In Grade 7, the emphasis was on family, tradition, culture, and identity. Students explored how family structures and cultural practices shape personal and societal identities worldwide. They learned about different family dynamics, from close-knit groups in traditional societies to more individualistic structures in urban countries. Students also examined the significance of family gatherings, particularly during festivals, in reinforcing cultural values. Through role-playing activities, they were able to experience customs from various cultures, gaining a firsthand perspective on how traditions influence individual identity and community cohesion.

Cultural identity was another major focus, with students participating in mock debates to investigate the effects of globalization on local customs and languages. They discussed the challenges of maintaining cultural heritage amid the pressures of a rapidly globalizing world. These debates encouraged students to think critically about the intricacies of globalization, igniting essential conversations regarding diversity and respect for cultural differences.

The role of technology in society was another vital topic. In discussions regarding social media and misinformation, students reflected on how the digital environment both unites and divides individuals. The class delved into the importance of digital literacy in navigating these complexities, helping students acknowledge their responsibilities as digital citizens.

As they transitioned into Grade 8, students shifted their focus to global issues, including migration, urbanization, and biodiversity loss. The migration unit investigated the causes and consequences of forced migration, such as war, climate change, and economic hardship. Students analysed case studies and migration trends, grasping how migration influences both the areas people depart from and the communities they join. They also explored how migration can shape national identities and social frameworks, cultivating empathy for migrant populations.

The urbanization unit examined the swift expansion of cities and the resulting social and environmental challenges. Through mind mapping, students assessed both the positive and negative consequences of urbanization, including overcrowding, the reduction of green spaces, and the impact on social equity. They also discussed the advantages of global interconnectedness, such as enhanced access to services and opportunities.

Finally, the topic of biodiversity and ecosystem decline underscored the urgent need for environmental sustainability. Students learned how human activities, such as deforestation and pollution, contribute to ecosystem degradation and species loss. They discussed the broader ramifications of biodiversity loss, including its influence on food security, climate change, and economic stability. These teachings highlighted the importance of embracing sustainable practices to safeguard the planet.

By the year’s end, students in both grades had developed a thorough understanding of the interconnectedness of global challenges. Whether investigating family traditions or tackling environmental sustainability, these lessons equipped students with the skills to think critically, empathize with others, and take responsible actions toward fostering a more sustainable and just future.
