Engineering for Kids: Where Imagination Meets Science!
By: Revia Emmanuella Jono, 8B Student
In a world where inventions are created almost constantly, engineering has become a crucial part of our lives. Whether that be from revolutionary innovation to regular life occurrences, engineering can be used everywhere in our daily lives.
Engineering is essentially the planning of an innovation. It requires planning of the designs, structures, machines, testing and the math and science associated with it. Engineering is influential to every invention, for if we don’t have a plan, we would never be able to create and execute it.
As our society evolves, it’s important to teach the younger generation the skills needed to solve problems and learn how many structures work. Luckily to say, Stella Maris Gading Serpong provides activities specifically focused on this! They have been collaborating with EFK (Engineering for Kids) to provide and educational, but enjoyable change in students’ regular lessons.
This activity has been available for all grades for every semester, and I’m happy to say that the people from EFK have always been able to explain easily along with making it fun and interactive. It’s also a nice change of pace to the usual repetitive lessons. The experience is something that all students look forward to and oftentimes, are able to understand how popular inventions work.
I think EFK provides knowledge, that seemed to be complex, and is able to deliver it in a way students can understand easily. They also allow us to practice what we have learnt by building the creation we learned about. And although, we might only be able to make simpler versions of a creation, we still learn a lot about the process and potentially how more complex machinery work.
More recently, on EFK, we made an early version of a camera! It was surprisingly simple! All we needed to do was let the light pass through the lens and reflect off a mirror. It wasn’t really able to take pictures like modern-day cameras; however, we were able to place a thin sheet of paper above the mirror, and it would reflect the image onto it.
They also provided us with the time to fix or tweak any part of our creation, which allowed us to try and figure things out ourselves with the knowledge we learned. Additionally, they’re always open to creativity! After we’re done with making the project, we’re usually given a chance to decorate it as we like which really makes it all the more memorable.
Overall, I think EFK is one thing about school that a lot students can look forward to and it helps to develop our understanding, problem-solving skills and creativity. I do hope I can see more fun projects from EFK this year!
