Mandarin Language in Stella Maris School
China has become the second-largest economy in the world, and Mandarin, as its official language, is crucial for business and trade. Many multinational companies are now seeking employees who are proficient in Mandarin to help them navigate this fast-growing market. By teaching Mandarin at an early age, students will be better equipped to engage in future global economic opportunities, whether in the fields of trade, diplomacy, or technology.
At Stella Maris, the school recognizes the growing significance of multilingual education and has introduced Mandarin as a part of its curriculum. Understanding that Mandarin can be a challenging language to learn, the school adopts a simple and structured approach to ensure that students are introduced to the language in an accessible and engaging way. For example, in our Grade 4 Mandarin class, we are currently learning lessons 13 and 14. I go to school at 8 (我八点上学) and I eat bread for breakfast (早饭吃面包). In these lessons, we learn how to express our likes and dislikes when it comes to food and drinks. For example, we practice saying sentences like “I like to eat noodles” (我喜欢吃面条）or “I don’t like to eat bread” (我不喜欢吃面包）. We also talk about our daily routines, such as what time we usually wake up, eat breakfast, or go to bed. These lessons help us to use these phrases in our daily lives, making it easier for us to communicate in Mandarin.
Learning Mandarin is important for children because it opens up many opportunities for their future. As one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, Mandarin allows us to communicate with more people. By learning Mandarin from a young age, children can develop strong communication skills and better prepare for their future.
