Explore New Experience Through Experiential Learning
The nursery class in Preschool Stella Maris Gading Serpong just conducted their first small excursion activity on September 11, 2024. For nursery students, some of the best memories of their academic journey are made on small excursion activities. Small excursions combine the excitement of exploring new places, participating, engaging in new activities, and creating with the joys of learning and education. This small excursion activity went well, this activity involved direct learning experiences for students throughout the entire series of events. This experience in this framework of learning outside the classroom is an active process, where students face authentic problems, build new hypotheses, test real solutions, and interact with others to understand the world around them.
On this occasion, the nursery class held a small excursion at McDonald’s Gading Serpong, through this activity students are given access to third-party experts or sites where they can hear from the experts, such as learning to make burgers and ice cream directly with McDonald’s employees who are skilled in their fields. Another activity, students can do a McDonald’s kitchen tour so that students can access all cooking equipment, refrigerators, storage, and others. This is an opportunity for students to gain experiences that are not available to the general public and thus can produce in-depth learning and foster meaningful relationships for students. It also helps teachers teach students things they may not understand in depth.
Along with the conceptual engagement that these experiences require, the student bonding that occurs on small excursions enhances the learning experience and creates a learning community as students progress through a discipline. Providing students with hands-on learning experiences in the field also allows instructors to get to know their students better in terms of how they see the world differently than the instructor. This insight into students’ worldviews can help students gain perspective and be better able to communicate learning concepts.
The essence of experiential learning is using the act of getting outside to incorporate as much learning into children’s everyday lives as possible. Just being outside provides countless opportunities for educators to explore, investigate, and explain sights, sounds, tastes, and concepts to children. That’s what makes school trips so great; every minute there’s a new learning opportunity dropping into your lap. If you’re aware of and look for these opportunities, you can add another dimension to your children’s learning experience, and boost their confidence in facing the big, scary world out there.
