Primary 3 Math Project:
Collecting and Representing Data in Bar Graphs and Picture Graphs

Understanding and organizing information data is important in mathematics as well as numbers and computations in visual. The ability to gather facts and present it in a meaningful way is one of the most crucial abilities that the students start to acquire in primary school. In order to support this, teachers can set a project activity related to data interpretation for primary students. The teacher teaches students to use bar graphs and picture graphs to represent data accurately. These graphs convert the numerical values into visual representations. With visual graphs, someone can easily interpret the data information.

The aim of this project is to encourage students to collect and interpret the data. The focus of this project is to find out the favorite school subjects among classmates. Each student votes for the subject they enjoy most, and all answers are recorded. This activity makes data collection simple, real, and connected to students’ everyday lives These kinds of graphs are great for presenting easy-to-understand data, like the outcomes of a class polling and present data about their favorite school subjects using bar graphs and picture graphs.

The students’ methods of gathering and presenting data, as well as analyzing it, are important aspects of learning. Just like in other areas of teaching mathematics, the teacher’s role is to support learning in ways that help students reach the intended goals. 

There are several steps to guide students to create bar graphs and picture graphs.

  1. The teacher prepares the criteria of the student’s favorite subject(s): Math, Science, English, and Mandarin. Each student must vote to pick the favorite subject. The results are then recorded on their note and represented into the buffalo paper with interactive and decorated displays. 
  2. After the students collect the data, they need to organize the data before making the graphs, for example:

The table above makes the data clear and easy to use for the next step, so it is easier for students to convert the data into bar and picture graphs.

  1. Representing Data in a Bar Graph by displaying data using bar graphs to show values for different categories. The length or height of each bar indicates the amount related to that category. These graphs are useful because they allow clear and easy visual comparisons between different data sets. The categories (Math, Science, English, Mandarin) are placed along the bottom axis, and the numbers are placed along the side axis. Students are able to use different colors to shade the bars so it will be easy to compare. Students can immediately see the differences between each total number in the data subjects.
  2. Picture graphs, also known as pictographs, use symbols or images to show data instead of using bars. Each image stands for a specific number of items. To make the picture graph clear, the teacher sets a key. For example, using a symbol (1 star = 1 student). This picture graph is visually attractive for someone who recognizes the data. Pictographs are more enjoyable to look at since they are more creative and fun to create.

Students can add some drawings or decorations using colored paper, markers, stickers or cut-out shapes. These tasks enhance critical thinking and data comprehension.

This article shows how the teacher shares the information to teach collecting data, representing it in bar graphs and pictographs, and analyzing the data with grade-appropriate examples and activities. Bar graphs also enable them to compare numbers against bars, while picture graphs are a more visually appealing option that allows for easy reading using symbols. Additional Graphs can present the same information in two distinct ways, but they differ in their visual presentation.

Finally, this project not only teaches math but also inspires teamwork, creativity, and confidence in presentation. The activity is both educational and fun, serving as a foundation for later mathematical studies.
