Unraveling Technology and Society: A Journey into Digital Society

By: Yvonne Oliviera Sunwie – 11 St. Evan

Digital technology is a huge part of our everyday lives, shaping how we talk, learn, and even how governments and businesses run. As a student in the IB Digital Society program at Stella Maris Gading Serpong, I’ve come to appreciate both the amazing benefits and the serious challenges that come with our growing dependence on technology. Social media, for example, not only links individuals but also uses algorithms that subtly shape perceptions and control the flow of information. Artificial intelligence (AI) is another game-changer, but it also raises big questions about fairness, privacy, and job security. Even in education, technology is changing the way we learn, making digital literacy more important than ever. As technology keeps advancing, we need to make sure it helps everyone, not just a privileged few.

Before joining the IB program at Stella Maris Gading Serpong, I struggled with choosing between economics and digital society. In the end, I went with digital society because it offered a broader view of how technology is shaping our world—not just financially, but socially and ethically too. This subject has pushed me to think critically about how culture, ethics, and power all intersect in the digital world.

My experience in this subject has left me valuable skills for assessing and addressing real-world digital issues. An example is my involvement in a Model United Nations (MUN) conference on “Addressing Ethics and Job Security Surrounding Artificial Intelligence’s Impact on Human Labor.” Whereas, at the conference, we discussed the negative impacts of AI, ethical responsibilities, and proposed policies to balance job displacement with AI’s potential benefits. My studies about ethical issues, AI-driven automation, and potential solutions like reskilling and upskilling employees for new technological roles gave me a solid understanding of the topic, allowing me to showcase my meaningful solutions that were well-valued.

Speaking about Digital Society, Stella Maris Gading Serpong students in the digital society class are very active and we have a great time in general. Whenever we have concerns or need advice, our teacher, Mr. Herman is always open, helpful and always humorous. Studying digital society has deepened my awareness of the power and responsibilities that come with living in a connected world. It has shown me the importance of shaping technology for the better, ensuring that innovation serves humanity. As technology continues to evolve, understanding its societal impact is crucial in building a more improved and just digital future.
